COSING (COSmetic INGredient database) is the European Commission's official database of cosmetic substances and ingredients. It catalogs ingredients with their INCI names, CAS numbers, functions, and any regulatory restrictions or bans under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. The database reflects legally binding EU cosmetics regulations, not independent scoring.

The Other Side
COSING is a regulatory reference tool, not a safety rating system. It tells you what's allowed or restricted in the EU but doesn't score ingredients for consumer risk. Some critics note the EU can be slow to update restrictions as new research emerges. However, the EU's cosmetics regulation is generally considered stricter than the US approach, banning over 1,600 ingredients compared to the FDA's much shorter list.
