MADE SAFE screens finished products against a database of known toxic chemicals, checking for behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental/reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors, fire retardants, heavy metals, high-risk pesticides, neurotoxins, and toxic solvents. Products must also pass an ecosystem safety review to ensure ingredients are not bioaccumulative or persistent in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Every ingredient in a product must clear screening — there is no threshold allowance.

The Other Side
MADE SAFE is a relatively young certification program with a smaller brand roster than EWG VERIFIED. Some critics note the certification fee structure may be a barrier for smaller indie brands. The screening methodology is less granular than EWG's individual ingredient scoring — products either pass or fail. However, MADE SAFE's whole-product screening and ecosystem safety review are considered strengths.
