Findings

Two Moroccan Cistus plant extracts showed antibacterial activity against the three main bacteria that cause acne (Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, and Propionibacterium acnes). Both extracts were rich in polyphenols—mainly flavonoids and tannins—and demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in lab testing. However, this was early-stage research in test tubes and cells, not yet tested on actual skin.

Methodology

Researchers analyzed the chemical composition of two Cistus leaf extracts using lab techniques, then tested their antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory abilities through multiple in vitro assays and against known acne-causing bacteria.
