After 10 weeks, people taking omega-3 fatty acids (2,000 mg) or gamma-linolenic acid (400 mg from borage oil) saw significant decreases in both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions compared to placebo. Skin biopsies showed reduced inflammation and lower levels of interleukin-8, a protein that drives acne. No serious side effects were reported.
45 people with mild to moderate acne were split into three groups for 10 weeks: one taking omega-3s, one taking gamma-linolenic acid, and one taking placebo. Researchers measured acne improvement, took skin samples, and checked for safety issues.
