Scientists discovered 2-mercaptonicotinoyl glycine (2-MNG), a new ingredient that reduces dark spots and uneven skin tone by blocking melanin production at a different step than existing options. Unlike common brighteners, it doesn't interfere with the enzyme tyrosinase—instead it stops melanin building blocks from assembling into pigment, which means it works without disrupting healthy melanocyte cells.
Researchers screened hundreds of chemical compounds using computer modeling to find candidates with the best balance of effectiveness, safety, and environmental impact. They then tested the winning ingredient on lab-grown skin and human skin samples to confirm it actually worked.
