Methodology

This nationally representative survey of 1,136 US adults examined the prevalence of adverse health effects from exposure to fragranced consumer products including air fresheners, cleaning supplies, laundry products, and personal care items. 34.7% of respondents reported health problems such as migraine headaches, respiratory difficulties, asthma attacks, and contact dermatitis when exposed to fragranced products. 15.1% had lost workdays or lost a job due to fragrance exposure. The study highlighted that fragrance formulations are protected as trade secrets, preventing consumers from identifying specific sensitizing chemicals.
