Functions
Humectant
A moisture magnet. Pulls water from the air and deeper skin layers up to the surface to keep skin plump and hydrated.
Solvent
Dissolves other ingredients so they distribute evenly in the formula. Often the invisible "base" everything else is mixed into.
Cleansing
Makes oil and water mix so dirt, makeup, and sunscreen can actually be washed away. The reason your face wash foams.
Emollient
Fills in the tiny cracks between skin cells to make everything feel smooth and soft. The "silky finish" ingredient.
Antioxidant
Protects skin from free radical damage caused by UV, pollution, and stress
Anti-Inflammatory
Boosts Collagen
Draws moisture to skin
Dissolves other ingredients
Traditional Use
A synthetic emulsifier developed in the mid-20th century from lauric acid (found in coconut and palm oils) and polyethylene glycol. Created to provide the conditioning properties of coconut oil in a more stable, water-soluble form.
